Revolutionizing Safety Training: The ATI-ONGC and NEBOSH Collaboration

In 1989, ATI-ONGC began its journey by pioneering efforts in petroleum safety and environmental management, becoming a trailblazer in setting industry standards for safety excellence

As a result, it was named the Institute of Petroleum Safety, Health, and Environment Management (IPSHEM). The significant transition from Margoa to Betul, Goa, marked the initial step toward achieving its objectives. The state-of-the-art training facilities at this location include advanced simulators for fire safety, sea survival, and process safety.

IPSHEM, which primarily focused on petroleum safety, recognized the significance of Occupational Health and Safety and integrated it into its evolution. Overcoming challenges in adapting safety protocols across diverse industries, the institute achieved notable advancements in training and awareness programs.

As safety expert Sir Brian Appleton once said, “Safety is not just a box to tick; it is the essence of quality and responsibility in every industry.” The initiative to raise awareness and implement effective safety programs culminated in 2024 when IPSHEM, now rebranded as Advanced Training Institute-ONGC, received recognition from NEBOSH through their partnership. This partnership was further solidified when NEBOSH accredited ATI-ONGC as a Gold Learning Partner, making it the first public sector institution in India to achieve this remarkable distinction.

Highlighting Achievements with NEBOSH:

Since achieving NEBOSH accreditation in 2024, ATI-ONGC has successfully trained 233 candidates across its NEBOSH-accredited programs. This milestone demonstrates the institute’s dedication to providing world-class safety education and fostering a culture of occupational health and safety excellence.

The institute began offering NEBOSH-accredited programs to its employees and later expanded these offerings to the general public. The courses provided included: · NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (IGC)

• NEBOSH HSE Certificate in Process Safety Management (PSM)
• NEBOSH Certificate in Fire Safety (FSC)
• NEBOSH International Technical Certificate in Oil and Gas Operational Safety (IOGC)
• NEBOSH Environmental Management Certificate (EMC)

The collaboration between ATI-ONGC and NEBOSH has resulted in a significant advancement in Occupational Health and Safety education in India. Ambitious to achieve greater success, ATI-ONGC decided to sponsor the NEBOSH Graduation Ceremony and Online Conference 2024. By sponsoring the Graduation Ceremony held at Warwick University in the UK, the organization honoured the graduates and promoted the significance of safety education in everyday life.

Making safety education accessible is one of ATI-ONGC’s primary goals, which it demonstrated by sponsoring the NEBOSH Online Conference titled “Creating…Great Health and Safety Practice.” This one-day event featured prominent safety professionals, including the NEBOSH Director of Learning and Assessment and the IOSH Head of Advice & Practice. They presented on key topics such as work-related stress, safety culture, and mental health management. The event was free for all participants, who could also download an e-certification for each session they attended.

This initiative provided an excellent opportunity for ATI-ONGC to promote and raise awareness about the safety field while reinforcing its commitment to creating safer workplaces and communities, both in India and beyond.
